The Old City, Close Up

Dongcheng and Xicheng — the two districts inside the Second Ring Road, and the heart of imperial Beijing. The Ming city wall once ran roughly along this ring, and everything within it was laid out for the court: the Forbidden City on the central axis, the Temple of Heaven where emperors prayed for good harvests, Jingshan and Beihai as the imperial gardens, the Lama Temple and Confucius Temple for worship and learning. Between them sit the hutongs — Shichahai, Nanluoguxiang, Shijia — where the city eats, shops and still lives.

Close-up map of the old city of Beijing Dongcheng and Xicheng districts at close range, with 28 sights including Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, the Drum and Bell Towers, the hutongs around Shichahai, and the temples to the west.
