Important Notice: China's visa-free policy has been significantly expanded. As of 2026, 50 countries enjoy unilateral visa exemption for China, and a further 57 countries are covered by the 240-hour visa-free transit scheme. This is a major development for global travellers.

The list is compiled from the official NIA list of countries covered by unilateral visa exemption (as of 17 February 2026). Note what this list means in practice: Canada and the United Kingdom are both on it; the United States is not — American passport holders should look at the 240-hour transit scheme in Part 3 instead.

Part 3: 240-Hour Visa-Free Transit Policy (57 Countries)

In addition to the unilateral visa exemption above, China offers a 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit policy for travellers from 57 countries. The wording and the country list below follow the official NIA visa-free transit policy published on 20 August 2026.

🏔️ Entering Through Zhangjiajie

Both of Hunan's international airports are designated 240-hour transit visa-free ports — and this is the route most of our guests have never heard of.

  • Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport — added as a visa-free transit port on 17 December 2024

  • Changsha Huanghua International Airport — extended from 72 hours to 240 hours on the same date

The whole of Hunan Province is open for your stay, and you may also travel on into the permitted areas of the other 23 provinces and regions within your 240 hours. If you hold a passport from one of the 57 eligible countries and a confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region, you can land in Zhangjiajie visa-free and stay up to ten days. The designation was confirmed by the Hunan Provincial Department of Commerce when the National Immigration Administration expanded the scheme.

In other words: if your itinerary is "somewhere in Asia → Zhangjiajie → somewhere else", you may not need a visa at all. Few visitors plan it that way, because the option simply isn't surfaced at the visa stage — it only exists at the port. It is also the single most useful thing to know if your dates are short and you want the sandstone pillars on the itinerary.

Two practical notes. First, transit visa-free still requires a confirmed onward ticket out of China to a third country or region — that is the condition that makes it "transit". 🚢 New Ports Added (November 2025)

Five ports were added in November 2025, bringing the total from 60 to 65:

  • Guangzhou Pazhou Passenger Port

  • Hengqin Port (Zhuhai)

  • Zhongshan Port

  • Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Port

  • West Kowloon Station (Guangzhou–Shenzhen–Hong Kong Express Rail Link)

Part 4: Entry Requirements & Tips

📋 Documents to Prepare

Although entry is visa-free, immigration officers may ask for supporting documents. Recommended to carry:

  • ✅ Valid ordinary passport (valid for your entire stay)

  • ✅ Return / onward ticket (proof of leaving within 30 days)

  • ✅ Hotel reservations (for tourism) or an invitation letter (for business or visiting friends)

  • ✅ Proof of sufficient funds (bank statement or credit card)

  • ✅ Travel itinerary (optional, but helpful)

🛂 Port of Entry

Good news: the 30-day unilateral visa-free scheme applies at all open sea, land and air ports in China.

  • ✅ You can enter from any country or region (you are not required to depart from your home country)

  • ✅ You can enter by airplane, train, cruise ship or land border crossing

  • ⚠️ If you arrive with a private vehicle, you must complete import/export procedures under Chinese law

Note the difference: the 240-hour transit scheme is limited to the 65 designated ports listed above — you cannot enter at just any port if you are travelling on transit visa-free.

Separately, China operates several other regional visa-free schemes worth knowing about — including 30-day visa-free entry to Hainan Province for 61 countries, and visa-free cruise-ship entry for tour groups.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I extend my stay beyond 30 days?
A: If you need to stay longer than 30 days, apply for a visa at a Chinese embassy or consulate before you travel. If you are already in China and need to extend for a legitimate reason, apply for a stay permit at the exit-entry administration of the local public security bureau.

Q: Can I work or study visa-free?
A: No. Visa-free entry is strictly for tourism, business visits, family visits, exchanges and transit. Working, studying or journalism require the appropriate visa.

Q: Do I need to register with the police?
A: If you stay in a hotel, the hotel handles registration. If you stay at a private residence, you must register with the local police within 24 hours of arrival.

Q: Can I visit Tibet?
A: Tibet sits outside the ordinary visa-free itinerary — even with a visa-free entry, you need a Tibet Travel Permit arranged through a licensed agency, plus a local guide. Q: What if my passport is lost or stolen in China?
A: Report it to the police immediately and contact your embassy for an emergency travel document. Chinese immigration will verify your identity and entry record before you depart.

  • ❌ Overstay — leaving after 30 days without an extension counts as illegal stay (fines, detention or deportation)

  • ❌ Work illegally — even remote work for a foreign company can be problematic

  • ❌ Engage in journalism — this requires a special media visa

🏔️ 从张家界入境

湖南的两个国际机场都是 240 小时过境免签口岸 —— 而这是绝大多数客人从未听说过的路径。

  • 张家界荷花国际机场 —— 2024 年 12 月 17 日起新增为过境免签口岸

  • 长沙黄花国际机场 —— 同日由 72 小时延长至 240 小时

停留期间可在湖南全省活动，也可在 240 小时内跨省前往另外 23 个省（区、市）的允许停留区域。如果您持有 57 个适用国家之一的护照，并有前往第三国 / 地区的确认联程客票，就可以免签落地张家界、停留最多 10 天。该口岸的设立由湖南省商务厅在国家移民管理局放宽政策时确认。

换句话说：如果您的行程是「亚洲某地 → 张家界 → 另一地」，可能完全不需要签证。很少有旅客这样规划，因为这个选项在办签阶段根本不会出现 —— 它只存在于口岸环节。

好消息：30 天单方面免签适用于中国所有对外开放的海、陆、空口岸。

  • ✅ 可以从任何国家 / 地区出发（不要求从本国出发）

  • ✅ 可以乘坐飞机、火车、邮轮或经陆路口岸入境

  • ⚠️ 如驾乘自备交通工具来华，需按中国法律法规办理进出境手续

注意区别：240 小时过境免签仅限上述 65 个指定口岸 —— 走这条政策时，不能从任意口岸入境。

问：我可以停留超过 30 天吗？
答：如需停留超过 30 天，须在出行前向中国驻外使领馆申请与来华事由相符的签证。如已在中国、因合理正当事由需继续停留，应向公安机关出入境管理机构申请办理停留证件。

问：我可以免签工作或学习吗？
答：不可以。免签入境严格限于旅游、商务访问、探亲、交流和过境。工作、学习和新闻采访需要相应签证。

问：我需要向警方登记吗？
答：如在酒店住宿，酒店会办理登记。如在居民家中住宿，须在抵达后 24 小时内向当地公安机关登记。

问：可以去西藏吗？
