Tianmen Mountain Cable Car Closure: What Changes From October 13
Zhangjiajie Travel China · Travel News Update · October 13, 2026
If you are planning Tianmen Mountain between October 13 and the resumption date, the main cable car will not be running. Only one route is open, and it is not the route most itineraries use.
This is not a rumour. It comes straight from the Tianmen Mountain scenic area's official notice, published on October 10. Here is exactly what is changing, and what it means for your trip.
The short version
The Tianmen Mountain cable car is fully closed for passenger service from October 13, 2026, because of an overall upgrade and construction project.
Only Route C (round-trip express cableway) is operating. Routes A, B, 1 and 2 are all suspended.
The reopening date has not been announced. The official notice says it will be published separately, based on construction progress.
Ticket sales run 7:30–16:00. The first cableway departs at 8:00.
Three glass walkways and the Heaven Ladder Stairway may close at any time for weather, maintenance, or events.
The practical takeaway: Tianmen Mountain is still open and still worth visiting. But you will now climb on a cable car, walk up 999 steps to Heaven Gate Cave, and descend by cable car. If your itinerary was built around the long cable car ride, your time on the mountain is roughly an hour shorter. Plan the day with that in mind.

The one route that is running
This is the full walking sequence on Route C, exactly as the official notice describes it:
Enter through the Mountain Gate, as usual
Ride the Heaven Gate Cave express cableway up to the cave
Walk the 999 steps up to Heaven Gate Cave itself
From behind the cave, take the 7-level through-mountain escalator to the summit
Walk the summit viewpoints
Take the escalator back down to the cave
Ride the express cableway down to the Mountain Gate and exit
One thing your ticket does not cover. The Route C package includes the round-trip express cableway and the 7-level through-mountain escalator (upper section). It does not include the lower escalator up to Tianmen — the section at the very beginning, right after you enter.
If you want that lower escalator, budget a separate ticket for it on site.
What can still close on any day
The notice explicitly warns that these can shut at short notice because of weather, maintenance, or special events:
The West Line glass walkway
The East Line glass walkway
The Panlong Cliff glass walkway
The Heaven Ladder — the999-step stairway up to the cave
The last one matters most. The 999 steps are the signature climb of Tianmen Mountain. If it closes on your travel day, you lose the single most photographed view in Zhangjiajie.
What has not changed
The shuttle bus still runs. The round-trip shuttle between the lower cable car station and the Mountain Gate is operating normally.
The mountain is open. This is a transport change, not a closure. Tianmen Mountain is still a full day trip.
Ticket booking is unchanged. Book through the official WeChat mini-programme Zhangjiajie Yijoyou as usual.
What we suggest doing
Go early. Ticket sales start at 7:30 and the first cableway departs at 8:00. With only one route operating, queues concentrate on a single line. Arriving at opening time matters more than usual this season.
Bring real walking shoes. Route C is significantly more stairs than the old cable car route. The 999 steps at Heaven Gate Cave plus the summit escalator approach adds up.
Ask about the escalator before you buy. Whether the lower escalator to Tianmen is open on your day is worth checking at the entrance. It is not included in the package either way.
Have a backup plan for the afternoon. If you are pairing Tianmen Mountain with the National Forest Park or Grand Canyon, keep the order flexible until you see the mountain conditions on the day.
If your trip falls inside the closure window
Two options worth weighing.
Option one: keep Tianmen Mountain, adjust the day. The mountain is genuinely worth seeing, and Route C still reaches everything important. Budget two extra hours of walking and accept a slightly shorter visit.
Option two: shift the whole itinerary. If you have three or more days in Zhangjiajie, moving Tianmen Mountain to a different date gives you a buffer — the reopening date is not yet public, so any single day you schedule it could still be affected.
Travelling with us? Tell us your travel dates and we will check the current status and, if the closure window overlaps your trip, adjust your itinerary so you still see the mountain properly. There is no extra charge for reworking the plan.
