Wolong Giant Panda Base: Tickets, Hours & the Morning Trick

Zhangjiajie Travel China · Sichuan · Updated October 13, 2026

Most visitors arrive at Wolong in the afternoon, spend two hours photographing sleeping pandas, and leave wondering why the internet promised something else.

It is not a bad base. Wolong is a genuinely serious conservation site, sitting at 1,700 metres in the mountains roughly 130 kilometres from Chengdu. But the animals here follow the same rhythm as captive pandas everywhere in China — active in the morning, asleep through the middle of the day. Arrive at the right time and it is one of the best wildlife experiences in western China. Arrive at 14:00 and you have made a wasted afternoon.

This guide covers everything you need: current opening hours after the recent adjustment, where to be at what time, how tickets and discounts work for foreign passports, and how to combine Wolong with Dujiangyan in a single day.

Opening hours from October 12, 2026

Wolong Chinese Giant Panda Garden (Shenshuping Base) has adjusted its schedule as part of a trial period. Note that ticket sales and entry are separate steps — you cannot get in at 8:50, only buy your ticket.

TimeTicket sales open08:50Entry / gate opening09:00Last entry16:30Closing17:00

Plan backwards from 16:30, not 17:00. Entry closes half an hour before the gate does. Your usable window is 9:00 to 16:30 — seven and a half hours. Anyone driving from Chengdu or Dujiangyan needs to be at the gate by early afternoon, not late afternoon.

And arrive before 08:50. Ticketing only opens at 8:50; the gate itself opens at 9:00. Arriving at 08:30 does not save you time, because there is nothing to do until the ticket desk opens.

The new schedule is described as a trial adjustment. If hours change, the base says updates will be posted on its official WeChat account. Treat these hours as current rather than permanent, and check before travelling if your plans are tight.

Official notice from Wolong Giant Panda Garden announcing adjusted operating hours effective October 12, 2026: ticket sales from 8:50, entry at 9:00, last entry 16:30, closing 17:00.

The two viewing windows that actually matter

The base publishes its own guidance on this, and it is worth following. Wolong sits at 1,700 metres. Pandas are active outdoors in the cool of the morning, rest through the hottest part of the day, and pick up again in the late afternoon.

TimeWhat to expect09:00–11:00Best window. Pandas are feeding and active outdoors. If you only have one visit, come now12:00–14:00Rest period. Most pandas are asleep. The base suggests shifting your visit to this window if you want fewer crowds rather than more activity14:00–16:30Second good window. Outdoor activity picks up again in the cooler late afternoon

A less obvious option: come in the afternoon. Many visitors arrive at opening and leave by 13:00. If you cannot manage the early start, arriving around 14:00 still catches the second active window — and the crowds have thinned out by then.

Dress for the altitude

The base sits at about 1,700 metres and runs 8–10°C cooler than Chengdu. This is the detail visitors most often miss — you leave Chengdu in a t-shirt and arrive shivering.

Bring a jacket or windbreaker even in summer, and layers you can add and remove as you walk between the enclosures. The site is also hilly and spread out, so comfortable shoes matter as much as the extra layer.

Getting there from Chengdu

The practical answer is a private car with a driver. Public transport to Wolong is slow and does not fit comfortably with a morning panda window.

A realistic morning departure from central Chengdu is around 6:00. That gets you to the gate close to opening time. The road climbs through mountain scenery and takes roughly two and a half hours.

If you would rather not drive, direct shuttle and round-trip tickets from Chengdu are sold through the official channel and through major booking platforms. They remove the navigation burden but fix the schedule for you — check the departure time before committing, because a 13:00 departure gets you there far too late.

Tickets

Tickets are booked through the official Wolong Giant Panda WeChat mini-programme, or through major booking platforms. Booking a day ahead is advisable. Same-day tickets are sometimes available, but popular days can sell out.

Discounts for foreign passport holders

This is where most international visitors leave money on the table. The concession structure at Wolong is generous, and most of these are verified against your passport rather than an ID card.

Bring your passport. The 60+ and 65+ concessions, the student rate and the Hong Kong and Macau concession are all checked against physical documents. A photograph of your passport on your phone will not be accepted at the gate.

Adult tickets are sold separately for non-mainland visitors at a slightly different rate from domestic adult tickets. The difference is small, but it means your trip cost estimate should be based on the international adult ticket.

Combining Wolong with Dujiangyan

The two sites sit 40 kilometres apart and share the same travel corridor, so most itineraries put them on the same day. The order matters more than most itineraries assume.

The version that works

  1. Depart Chengdu around 6:00

  2. Arrive Wolong near opening,09:00 — the first active window

  3. Spend two to three hours at the base, with a break for lunch in the town either side of it

  4. Drive to Dujiangyan in the afternoon, arriving mid-to-late afternoon

  5. Return to Chengdu in the evening

Dujiangyan suits the afternoon better than the morning for a practical reason: it is a much larger walking site, and the afternoon light on the Anlan Suspension Bridge and the Fish Mouth Levee is better than the morning flat.

There is also a neat consequence of Wolong's two active windows. If you arrive at opening, look at the pandas from 9:00, then drive to Dujiangyan and arrive back at Wolong late in the day, you catch the14:00–16:30 window on the way out — the base for an outbound transfer typically runs later than the inbound one.

If you want the Irrigation System UNESCO site properly rather than quickly, consider splitting it across two days. A single day with both is comfortable but brisk.

Seasonal notes

  • Summer (June–August) is the busiest season and the most likely to sell out. Book at least a week ahead.

  • September and October are arguably the best months — cooler, clearer, and the autumn colour on the approach road is strong.

  • Winter is cold but clear. Fewer visitors, and snow is not unusual at this elevation.

  • Heavy rain can affect parts of the reserve. Check the official notices before driving up the mountain road.

How long to spend here

Time availableRealistic plan2–3 hoursThe core enclosures only. Acceptable if you are combining with DujiangyanHalf dayThe right allocation for a day trip. This is what we recommendFull dayAll three zones including the wild-training and release areas, plus the panda museum next door

The base is divided into three zones: the main Shenshuping viewing and breeding area, the captive wild-training area, and the release area. The second and third are the quieter ones and the reason serious visitors stay longer.

Opening hours, viewing guidance and temperature notes above are taken from the official notice issued by Wolong Zhongjingxin Eco-Tourism Development Co., Ltd. on October 10, 2026, effective October 12, 2026. Because the adjusted schedule is described as a trial period, hours can change without notice; the base states that updates will be posted on its official WeChat account. Ticket rates and concession rules are confirmed separately and are subject to change. Please call 0837-6984864 before travelling to confirm the current schedule.
