China Travel News, Late October 2026: Tibet Goes Free for Winter, Cable Cars Drop Out, and Off-Peak Prices Start Nov 1

Here are the scenic-area changes across China that matter for your trip right now: Tibet opens its free winter-entry season, a run of cable cars goes down for maintenance, snow shuts the north and west, and winter hours plus off-peak prices begin on Nov 1. All dates come from official notices - confirm on the official channel on the day you travel.

Tibet opens free winter entry (Oct 15, 2026 - Mar 15, 2027)

Tibet's ninth annual Winter in Tibet campaign runs from 15 October 2026 to 15 March 2027. For the whole period, every A-rated scenic area in the region waives its entrance ticket - temples excluded. The list is long: the Potala Palace and its Snow City, Namtso, Yamdrok Lake, Basum Tso, Qomolangma (Everest) Nature Reserve, the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon, Sapu (shuttle CNY 45), Puma Yumco's blue ice, Qiangqin Manor, the Tibetan Planet astronomy hall, Namtso's Holy Elephant Gate, Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar, Pangong Tso and the Guge ruins - plus A-rated sites across Shigatse, Nyingchi, Shannan and Qamdo.

Licensed charter transport is capped at half of peak-season rates: large 23-29 seat vehicles no more than CNY 6 per km, mid 8-22 seat CNY 4 per km, small 5-7 seat CNY 3.5 per km.

Three things foreign visitors most often get wrong. First, the Potala is free but not ticket-free - reserve on the official mini-program about 10 days ahead. Second, temples such as the Jokhang and Tashilhunpo are NOT included. Third, you need a border permit in advance for Luozha County (Kula Kangri, Puma Yumco), Cona (Lebugou, Yumai) and Ngari. Namtso's shuttle is CNY 100 until Oct 31, then CNY 85; the road to Holy Elephant Gate is closed for construction until Dec 31 - navigate to the Holy Elephant Gate Visitor Center instead.

Cable cars and lifts going down

• Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (Yunnan): Glacier Park cable car is down Oct 22-30 (9 days), back Oct 31; Spruce Meadow (Yunshanping) is down Oct 31 - Nov 10 (11 days), back Nov 11. Note the late-arrival rule in force since Jul 13: visitors who miss their time slot are re-seated together for the 16:30-17:00 boarding, so arriving late does not mean going straight up.

• Wawushan (Sichuan): the Jinhuaqiao cable car is out Oct 19-28 (10 days) for maintenance; reach Gufoping by shuttle bus or on foot, where the upper cable car still runs.

• Jiulongshan (Baoji, Shaanxi): the passenger cable car is out Oct 20 - Nov 20; the area stays open for hiking.

• Luqu County (Gannan, Gansu): Gaxue Tibetan-village eco-area (3A), Gahai Lake and the Guomang wetland viewing deck stopped receiving visitors from Oct 15; reopening planned for end-April 2027.
