On January 9, the reporter learned from Chongqing Border Inspection General Station that throughout 2025, Chongqing Border Inspection General Station inspected a total of more than 2.48 million entry-and-exit personnel and more than 18,000 entry-and-exit flights, representing year-on-year growth of 30% and 26% respectively. Entry-and-exit personnel traffic has continued its high-level upward trend for multiple years.
As "China Travel" continues to heat up, Chongqing uses its unique charm of "8D magical city + cyberpunk" to keep "gaining fans" around the world. In 2025, Chongqing Border Inspection General Station inspected a total of more than 760,000 inbound foreign travelers, setting a record high. The top five source countries for inbound foreign travelers are Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, and South Korea. The main purposes are sightseeing and leisure, conferences and business, and visiting friends and relatives.
Data shows that the growth momentum of visitors from ASEAN countries to Chongqing is rapid, accounting for 72% of the total inbound foreign travelers. By the end of 2025, China had achieved full mutual visa exemption with 29 countries, and implemented unilateral visa exemption for 48 countries. The transit visa exemption policy has also been comprehensively relaxed and optimized. Inbound foreign travelers who enjoyed unilateral exemption, mutual exemption, and transit visa exemption policies through Chongqing Port totaled nearly 275,000 person-times.
In 2025, a total of more than 1.22 million Chinese mainland travelers entered and exited through Chongqing Port, accounting for 53% of the total entry-and-exit travelers, a year-on-year increase of 6.5%. The top five destination countries for outbound travel are Thailand, Singapore, Japan, Malaysia, and Italy. The main purposes for outbound travel are sightseeing, employment, and study.
Chongqing Border Inspection General Station is closely following the development trend of rapid growth in entry-and-exit personnel. Focusing on optimizing processes, improving efficiency, and enhancing experience, it is fully committed to ensuring smooth flow of people and goods. It is efficiently implementing the 240-hour transit visa exemption policy, and comprehensively carrying out convenient measures such as 24-hour direct transit without border inspection procedures, online submission of foreigner entry cards, dedicated processing zones for transit visa exemption temporary entry permits, appointment declaration, immediate processing upon arrival, and one-time completion, so as to promote Chongqing's high-level opening up and high-quality development with high-quality, efficient, and enthusiastic service.
II. Inbound Foreign Travelers Hit Record High – Chongqing Daily Digital Edition
Title: Q1 Jiangbei International Airport Port Entry-Exit Passenger Traffic Up 49% YoY Source platform: Chongqing Daily Digital Edition Published date: Saturday, April 4, 2026 Reporter: Zhou Song (New Chongqing – Chongqing Daily) URL: https://epaper.cqrb.cn/cqrb/2026-04/04/001/content_rb_358470.htm
Our correspondent (New Chongqing – Chongqing Daily reporter Zhou Song) On April 3, the reporter learned from Chongqing Exit-Entry Border Inspection General Station that in the first quarter of this year, the Jiangbei International Airport port handled more than 730,000 entry-and-exit passengers, a year-on-year increase of 49%, ranking first in growth rate among the top ten airports in China. Among them, inbound foreign travelers via Jiangbei International Airport port reached more than 137,000 person-times, a year-on-year increase of 106%, setting a record high for the same period in history.
According to analysis, the main purposes of inbound foreign travelers coming to Chongqing are tourism and sightseeing, visiting friends and relatives, and conference and business activities. Among them, travelers for tourism and visiting friends and relatives account for 88%. This reflects that Chongqing's consumption scenarios are increasingly rich and its cultural tourism quality continues to improve.
Judging from the nationalities of inbound foreign travelers, Asian countries remain the main force, accounting for 77%. The top five are Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, and Indonesia. European countries account for 16%, a year-on-year increase of 2.8 times.
As Chongqing vigorously builds an important strategic pivot for the new era western development and a comprehensive hub for inland opening up, exchanges between Chongqing and the world are becoming increasingly frequent. In addition, China continues to expand its visa exemption "circle of friends" and has introduced convenient policies such as the 240-hour transit visa exemption and 24-hour direct transit without border inspection procedures. All of these have become the core engine driving the growth of inbound foreign personnel.
For example, the visa exemption policy has significantly shortened the customs clearance time for international transit passengers, effectively enhancing the attractiveness of Chongqing's aviation port to international transit passengers, and improving the function of Chongqing's international aviation hub and the competitiveness of international routes. In the first quarter, inbound foreign travelers who enjoyed various types of visa exemption policies via Jiangbei International Airport port totaled nearly 100,000 person-times, accounting for 74% of the total inbound foreign travelers, a year-on-year increase of 113%.

As the 9-day "longest Spring Festival holiday in history" came to an end, Chongqing Culture and Tourism delivered a remarkable report card: 130 A-level scenic spots under municipal key monitoring received a cumulative total of 12.6 million visitors, a year-on-year increase of 5.6%. Among them, inbound overnight visitors representing "international traffic" reached 28,500 person-times, a year-on-year surge of 52.1%. Chongqing inbound tourism ranks stably among the top ten in China.
During the 2026 Spring Festival, the number of foreign travelers at Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport increased significantly. Data from Chongqing Border Inspection General Station shows that during the 9-day Spring Festival holiday, entry-and-exit foreign personnel at the port reached more than 12,000 person-times, a year-on-year increase of nearly 80%. More than 6,000 foreign tourists specifically chose Chongqing as their travel destination.
Ctrip platform data shows that Thai tourist visits to Chongqing increased by 395% year-on-year, and related bookings increased by 828%. These data reflect the structural transformation of Chongqing inbound tourism. International tourists coming to China have shifted from past "cost-performance" driven motivation to today's "heart-price-ratio" driven motivation that values emotional value and cultural experience.
On the evening of Chinese New Year's Eve, the Nanbin Road was packed with people. At 8:30 PM, the "New Rhyme Chongqing" drone light show staged spectacularly. 10,000 drones soared into the sky, outlining shapes such as camellia, walking lanterns, galloping horses, and waving pandas in the night sky.
The topic "Foreign Friends Rushing to Celebrate the New Year in Chongqing" topped the Weibo city trending list first place. The total online exposure exceeded 100 million. Under the hashtag #ChongqingSpringFestival on overseas social platforms, related videos were massively reposted, filled with comments of amazement and longing.
The "Action Plan for Building an All-Area Inbound Consumption Destination" released by Yuzhong District has delivered real results. In the Jiefangbei commercial district, many merchants have posted signs saying "Supporting Foreign Card Payment." The number of tax refund shops upon departure has increased by more than 3 times compared to one year ago.
As of January 2026, tax refund shops upon departure in Chongqing have reached 290 stores. "Buy now, refund now" shops cover the four core commercial districts of Jiefangbei, Chaotianmen, MixC, and Guanyinqiao. Data shows that tax refund sales upon departure in Yuzhong District have increased by nearly 5 times.
Starting from January 2026, Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport has increased flight frequency on popular routes such as Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, and Seoul. The total number of international and regional passenger routes has reached 38, with more than 240 flights per week.
V. Ctrip Group: China Inbound Tourism Development Report 2026
Occasion: Guilin "Inbound Tourism Forward-Looking Seminar" Source platform: China News Weekly Website (reposted from Ctrip Blackboard Official WeChat Account) Published date: June 2, 2026 Presenter: Ctrip Group CEO Summer Sun URL: https://www.inewsweek.cn/observe/2026-06-02/30437.shtml
Key Data:
In 2025, inbound foreign tourists exceeded 35 million person-times, a year-on-year increase of 30%. International tourism revenue growth approached 40%, ranking sixth globally.
Visa exemption policy has become the core driver of growth. Currently, nearly 80 countries enjoy inbound visa exemption policies in China. The growth rate of inbound tourists from visa-exempt countries far exceeds that of countries requiring visas. The growth rate reaches 50%, contributing the vast majority of the industry's incremental growth.
The Southeast Asian market has become the core growth engine of China inbound tourism. Among them, the growth rate of Thai inbound tourist sources reached more than 100% year-on-year. The ranking of Malaysian tourist sources jumped from fifth place to third place.
Traditional high-end source markets in Europe, America, and Australia: the growth rate of British inbound tourist sources reached 36%. After the visa exemption policy was implemented, the growth rate of Australian inbound tourists has stabilized at 20%.
Flight supply is the key factor determining inbound passenger flow. The conversion efficiency per flight increased from 1.6 in 2019 to 12.1 by the end of 2025. Demand recovery is clearly faster than supply recovery.
Chongqing has been listed as a "breakout city" in the first echelon with growth exceeding 100%. Relying on continuous upward trend of viral traffic, its tourist source growth momentum is rapid.
Inbound tourism destination gradient structure: Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen serve as international gateways. Chengdu, Chongqing, Xi'an, Guilin, and Zhangjiajie undertake demand for in-depth experiences and cultural exploration.
Western cultural tourism city strategy (Chengdu-Chongqing, Xi'an): Focus on historical and cultural experiences. Prioritize deepening Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand source markets. Simultaneously cultivate South Korean, European, and American cultural study tour customer groups.
VI. Chongqing Inbound Tourist Growth 43%; Internationalization Takes New Steps
Source platform: NetEase Subscription (reposted from Zhangxin) Published date: May 8, 2026, 15:15:21 URL: https://www.163.com/dy/article/KSDRE2PT0556KR94.html
During this year's May Day holiday, Chongqing received 25,400 inbound overnight visitors, a year-on-year increase of 42.8%. This data is quite impressive, indicating that Chongqing's international appeal is rapidly increasing.
Why are inbound tourists growing so fast? The editor analyzed several reasons. First, expansion of visa exemption policy. China has implemented visa exemption or convenient visa policies for multiple countries, lowering the threshold for foreign tourists to visit China. Second, Chongqing's international popularity has increased. Chongqing's unique mountain city landscape, hot pot cuisine, and historical culture have very high heat on international social media. Third, improved transportation accessibility. The increase in international routes at Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport makes it more convenient for foreign tourists to fly directly to Chongqing.
Where do inbound tourists like to go? The editor learned that Jiefangbei, Hongya Cave, and Ciqikou are must-visit attractions. The newly opened Chaotianmen · City Inside is also attracting foreign tourists to check in. Cultural attractions such as Hongyan Revolutionary Memorial Hall and Huguang Guild Hall have also attracted many foreign tourists interested in history.
Yuzhong District is accelerating the building of an international consumption center city core area and a central and western international exchange center core area. Payment facilitation has improved, making it more convenient for foreign tourists to swipe cards and scan QR codes. Multilingual signage and multilingual services improve the experience for foreign tourists.
For Chongqing, inbound tourism still has significant room for growth. Compared with Beijing, Shanghai, and Xi'an, the number of foreign tourists in Chongqing still has a gap, but the growth rate is fast. With the increase in international routes, expansion of visa exemption policies, and improvement of city services, Chongqing is expected to become an important destination for foreign tourists visiting China.

Chongqing Border Inspection is closely following the actual situation of the substantial increase in inbound foreign travelers. It implements zoned inspection and tidal police deployment, launches the "Border Inspection Express" service measure for foreign tour groups and opens dedicated channels, equips foreigner entry card online filling terminals, and activates self-service collection channels for direct transit passenger information, continuously improving the quality and efficiency of port customs clearance.
According to Chongqing Border Inspection, in the first quarter of 2026, the number of entry-and-exit passengers at Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport port reached more than 730,000 person-times, a year-on-year increase of 49%. (End)
Chongqing Inbound Travel in 2026: What Foreign Visitors Actually Need to Know
Based on official reports and on-the-ground experience as of June 2026
Chongqing has been all over the news lately. The numbers are real: inbound overnight visitors hit 28,500 during the 2026 Spring Festival, up 52.1% year-on-year. Foreign traveler arrivals at Jiangbei International Airport surged 106% in Q1 2026. The city is officially a "breakout destination" in Ctrip's 2026 inbound tourism report.
But numbers don't tell the whole story. If you're a foreign visitor planning a trip to Chongqing — or a travel agent helping clients get here — you need to know what actually happens on the ground. I've pulled together the real concerns travelers have, and what the current situation actually looks like.
1. Eating — Ordering, Paying, and Spice Levels
What travelers worry about:
Reading the menu. Chongqing street food, hot pot, and "Jianghu" dishes — most small restaurants have menus in Chinese only. No English, let alone Thai or Malay. Ordering means pointing at pictures and hoping for the best.
Paying the bill. You pull out your Visa card — the owner shakes their head. You pull out cash — they can't make change. You pull out your phone — Alipay won't bind your foreign card.
Communicating spice level. You say "mild spice" and they don't understand. What arrives is a pot of red oil. Your stomach doesn't recover for three days.
What the actual situation is:
Yuzhong District is rolling out a multilingual menu project, setting standards for menu translation, and distributing multilingual menus in batches. Some scenic areas (like Wuling Mountain Grand Canyon) already have multilingual services on Ctrip's international platform. But the vast majority of hole-in-the-wall restaurants still don't have them. If you want authentic local food, bring a translation app or have a guide with you.
Payment: Yuzhong District now has over 5,300 merchants accepting foreign cards, covering large commercial complexes and 3A+ scenic spots. But local specialty restaurants and guesthouses still have low foreign card acceptance. "Big malls: yes. Small shops: no." That's the reality.
Outside core commercial areas, cash is still your safest bet. Yuzhong District has distributed 108,000 "small change wallets" to taxi drivers and small merchants, which has helped with the change problem. Jiangbei Airport's arrival service center can exchange small change and foreign currency.
2. Accommodation — Which Hotels Work, and Is Check-in a Hassle?
What travelers worry about:
Booking a guesthouse, arriving, and finding out they don't have the license to host foreign guests. The front desk won't let you stay.
Arriving at a hotel and having to fill out a stack of forms, photocopy your passport, and wait forever before you can get to your room.
What the actual situation is:
Chongqing has taken the national lead in implementing "immediate check-in for tour groups." Key locations are working toward full coverage of foreign card POS machines and foreign currency exchange points.
More importantly: starting March 20, 2026, seven provinces and cities including Chongqing began piloting online foreigner accommodation registration. If you're staying at a guesthouse, apartment, or non-hotel accommodation, you can complete registration through the "Immigration Bureau 12367" app or mini-program. No need to make a special trip to the police station.
That said: if you're booking a guesthouse yourself, ask in advance whether they're licensed to host foreign guests. Star-rated hotels and international chains are generally fine. Small guesthouses and apartments are hit-or-miss.
3. Getting Around — GPS Fails, Taxis Are Hard, Metro Is Confusing
What travelers worry about:
Google Maps is basically useless in Chongqing. This is an "8D magical city" — GPS drift is normal. You're on the 1st floor, GPS says you're on the 3rd floor. You're on a bridge, GPS says you're underground.
Hailing a taxi and not knowing how to tell the driver where you're going. The driver doesn't understand English address names. Showing them the map on your phone — they might not read it either.
Not knowing how to take the metro. Station signage is hard to read. Transfer lines are confusing.
What the actual situation is:
Navigation: a CPPCC National Committee member has proposed supporting Chongqing in piloting multilingual place name translation and deep navigation features with Baidu and AutoNavi maps. It's still in progress. The reality: most navigation apps' foreign language functions are still not good enough.
Metro: Line 3 and Line 10 go directly to Jiangbei Airport, about 30-50 minutes to the city center. But multilingual signage coverage at stations is incomplete. Some stations are still mainly in Chinese.
Taxis: DiDi has a partial English interface, but Meituan Dache and others are basically all Chinese. The practical solution: prepare screenshots of your destination's Chinese address in advance and show them directly to the driver.
4. Sightseeing — Can't Read, Can't Understand, Can't Find the Way
What travelers worry about:
Scenic area signs are unreadable. Arriving at Hongya Cave and not knowing which entrance to use or which exit to leave from.
No foreign language tour guides. You want a guided tour, but English groups are few, and Thai or Malay guides are even scarcer.
Not knowing where to go. Online travel guides are all in Chinese. You can't find in-depth travel information in English.
What the actual situation is:
Multilingual signage: Yuzhong District has released the "Ten Actions for Inbound Tourism Enhancement," promoting multilingual updates to tourist signs and markers. Scenic areas like Wuling Mountain Grand Canyon have implemented 5-language signage at over 30 core attractions, and have installed multilingual smart guide terminals.
Foreign language tour guides: Chongqing has launched training classes for Southeast Asian language tourism talent, training Malay, Vietnamese, and Thai-speaking guides. Trainees can already give on-site explanations in Southeast Asian languages at Ciqikou, Hongya Cave, and Dazu Rock Carvings. But training takes time — Southeast Asian language guides are still a scarce resource.
Tour products: Yuzhong District has released 5 boutique tour routes under the "Enter Chongqing, Exit Chengdu" and vice versa framework, and developed composite products like "TCM + inbound tourism" and "Intangible Cultural Heritage + inbound tourism." Wulong Karst Scenic Area is the top natural sightseeing destination for foreign visitors. The immersive show "Chongqing 1949" ranks second.
5. Shopping — Card Payment, Tax Refund, Currency Exchange
What travelers worry about:
Buying things and not being able to swipe a foreign card.
Buying things and not knowing how to get a tax refund.
Running out of cash and not knowing where to exchange more.
What the actual situation is:
Card payment: Yuzhong District has built the city's only payment facilitation demonstration zone, deploying and upgrading nearly 7,000 foreign-card POS machines. 5,624 merchants can accept foreign cards, covering large commercial complexes, 3-star-and-above hotels, and 3A-and-above scenic spots. Coverage is relatively high in the four core commercial districts of Jiefangbei, Chaotianmen, MixC, and Guanyinqiao.
Currency exchange: Yuzhong District has 119 bank branches supporting foreign currency exchange. All 374 ATMs support foreign card cash withdrawal. Jiangbei Airport's arrival service center offers one-stop foreign card cash withdrawal, currency exchange, and mobile payment card binding guidance.
Tax refund: Chongqing now has 290 tax refund shops upon departure. "Buy now, refund now" covers the four core commercial districts. More importantly — Sichuan and Chongqing have achieved tax refund "buy now, refund now" interoperability. After shopping and getting a tax refund in any city in Sichuan or Chongqing, you can depart from either Chengdu or Chongqing airport.
That said: tax refund shops are mainly concentrated in core commercial districts. Fuling District currently has only 1 tax refund shop across the entire district. Once you leave Jiefangbei, tax refunds become a lot less convenient.
6. Entertainment — Language Barriers, Cultural Gaps
What travelers worry about:
Watching a show and not understanding the lines or the plot.
Wanting to experience local nightlife but not knowing how to find it or how to get there.
What the actual situation is:
The immersive show "Chongqing 1949" attracted over 80,000 foreign audience members in 2025. Some scenic areas have landed on Ctrip's international platform, covering English, French, Japanese, Korean, Thai, and other languages, with multilingual consultation and multi-currency settlement.
But most entertainment venues (bars, tea houses, theaters) still don't have multilingual services. You're on your own or need a guide to show you the way.
The Bottom Line: Three Things to Worry About Most
Synthesizing all six areas above, here are the three things international visitors to Chongqing need to worry about most:
1. Payment — the most headache-inducing problem.
Core commercial districts can do card payment, but once you leave the district you're on your own. Mobile payment card binding has a low success rate, and small frequent transactions still carry a 3% service fee. My advice: carry enough cash with you. Exchange small change at the airport arrival service center first.
2. Navigation and transportation — the most confusing problem.
Google Maps doesn't work in Chongqing. AutoNavi and Baidu don't have English versions. Metro signage isn't fully in English. Taxi drivers don't understand place names. My advice: prepare screenshots of all your destinations' Chinese addresses in advance and save them on your phone to show to drivers and passers-by.
3. Language — the most helpless problem.
Except for five-star hotels and some scenic spots, English penetration isn't high. Thai, Malay, and Vietnamese guides are an even scarcer resource. My advice: download a translation app in advance (Google Translate or DeepL recommended), and download the offline language packs before you arrive.
The Good News and the Bad News
Good news: Jiangbei Airport's arrival service center can now solve money exchange, card binding, and cash withdrawal in one stop. Yuzhong District is pushing payment facilitation across the entire area. Southeast Asian language guides are being trained. Multilingual signage is being rolled out.
Bad news: These conveniences are mainly concentrated in core commercial districts and a few scenic spots. Once you leave Jiefangbei or Guanyinqiao and go to Fuling, Wulong, or a hole-in-the-wall restaurant on a side street, none of the above problems go away.
Chongqing is worth it. Just come prepared.
