Zhangjiajie National Forest Park
If there is a place on earth that blends strangeness, steepness, beauty and serenity into every rock and cloud, it must be Zhangjiajie National Forest Park.
As China’s first national forest park, a World Natural Heritage site and a Global Geopark, it has been shaped by 380 million years of geological magic. Its unique quartz sandstone peak forest features more than 3,000 towering peaks rising straight from the ground, with hundreds of clear streams winding through them. People call it “a grand bonsai, a miniature fairyland.”
Walking into the park feels like entering a fantasy movie without special effects.
In Yuanjiajie, you’ll find the inspiration for Avatar’s Hallelujah Mountain – the Qiankun Column (Hallelujah Pillar). Its stone peak pierces the sky, and when mist floats by, it truly looks like it’s floating in mid-air. Crossing the First Bridge Under Heaven, a natural stone bridge spanning steep cliffs, you’ll stand above deep valleys and floating clouds, as if walking on clouds.
Stroll along Golden Whip Stream, where the water is clear and calm, peaks reflect on the surface, birds sing in the woods, and you might even spot playful monkeys. It’s the most gentle and peaceful trail in the park. Climb to Huangshi Village, and you’ll enjoy a 360° panoramic view of layered peaks – grand, magnificent, and worth the saying: “No visit to Huangshi Village, no real Zhangjiajie.”
The mountains here are not rolling like elsewhere. They stand tall, sharp, pillar-like, sometimes resembling swords, columns, people or animals. At dawn, mist covers the peaks; at sunset, the mountains glow red. Every season brings a different kind of beauty: fresh green in spring, cool shade in summer, colorful forests in autumn, and icy rime in winter. Every photo looks like a wallpaper.
Take your time, walk slowly, and breathe deeply. Listen to the streams, gaze at the peaks, and wait for the mist. You’ll understand why so many people call Zhangjiajie a must-visit natural wonder in a lifetime.
This is not just a scenic spot. It is a poem written by the earth, dedicated to mountains and clouds.
