Xi'an 3-Day Survival Guide for Foreign Tourists: Skip the Traps, See the Best
Xi'an has seen a massive surge in foreign visitors - inbound tour orders jumped 148% year-over-year in summer 2024, and the Terracotta Army now boasts 15,000+ reviews at 4.5 stars on TripAdvisor. But the pitfalls foreign travelers encounter are far more than they expect.
The three most common disasters:
● Hotels won't let you stay - near one major attraction, only 15 out of 52 hotels accept foreigners
● Terracotta Warriors tickets sold out at the door - "I've seen dozens of disappointed travelers turned away"
● Getting ripped off at Muslim Quarter - snacks sold by the "liang" (50 grams), one weigh-in and your money's gone
This guide avoids all those traps and covers 3 days in Xi'an.

1. Things You Must Do Before You Land
Don't wait until you're on the plane to figure out what to do when you arrive. Get all of the following done at home on Wi-Fi before you fly - otherwise every step after landing is a trap.
1.1 Digital Arrival Card (CDAC)
As of November 2025, paper arrival cards are gone, replaced by the fully digital China Digital Arrival Card (CDAC). You must fill it out online within 72 hours before entry and show the QR code at customs.
Four ways to fill it out (all free):
1. "China Immigration Management" App - recommended, easiest to fill out on your phone in advance
2. Blue CDAC QR code at the airport arrivals hall - for last-minute filling, but don't gamble on this
3. Mobile browser: https://s.nia.gov.cn/ArrivalCardFillingPhone/
4. Desktop browser: https://s.nia.gov.cn/ArrivalCardFillingPC/
WARNING: The system defaults to Chinese. First thing you do: switch to English in the top-right corner.
WARNING: After uploading your passport photo, OCR auto-fills the fields - but if the photo is blurry, everything will be wrong. Verify every character manually.
WARNING: "Address in China" cannot just say "Xi'an." You must enter your hotel's full name + address, or immigration will make you re-fill it.
WARNING: You must re-fill it every time you enter China. Last time doesn't count.
1.2 Payment Apps - Without These, You're Stuck in Xi'an
China is a nearly cashless country. The first thing foreigners need to do upon arrival:
Alipay (International Version) - Must Install
5. Download Alipay -> Register -> Upload passport for real-name verification -> Link Visa/Mastercard -> Activate Tour Pass -> Go to Transport -> Select Xi'an -> Generate metro ride code
Quote from Clara, a German tourist: "I linked my German credit card - hotels, taxis, restaurants, all payments were convenient."
WARNING: Verification requires uploading a passport photo. Try doing that on airport Wi-Fi - so get it done at home. Also, some small stalls only display WeChat QR codes, so install WeChat too.
WeChat Pay - Strongly Recommended
Requires a Chinese phone number to register WeChat, which is a bit more trouble, but once set up, it's social + payment in one app, and many places are more convenient with it.
Cash
Exchange 300-500 RMB in small bills. Mainly for Muslim Quarter street stalls and Huashan Mountain. Everywhere else, you basically don't need it.
1.3 Ride-Hailing App
There's no Uber in China. In 2016, Uber China was sold to Didi. The only ride-hailing app foreigners can use is DiDi Rider (the international version, not the Chinese app).
Steps: Download -> Register with overseas phone number -> Link foreign card -> Test once at home to confirm it works.
The lazy approach: Open the DiDi mini-program directly inside Alipay - no extra download needed. A Reddit user said: "Used it nearly 100 times in two months, zero problems."
TIP: Show the driver a screenshot of your destination's Chinese address. Most taxi drivers don't read English.
1.4 Internet Access
Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook are all blocked in China. Buy an eSIM (recommend Airalo or Nomad), or set up a VPN before you arrive - otherwise you're essentially offline in Xi'an.

2. How to Choose a Hotel That Won't Turn You Away
In May 2024, the Ministry of Public Security issued a notice: hotels must not refuse foreigners claiming "no foreign guest qualification." But in practice, small hotels may genuinely lack passport-scanning equipment, and you can still be turned away at the door.
Safe Hotel Choices - Ranked by Acceptance Rate
● International chains (Hilton / Marriott / IHG) - Acceptance rate: basically 100% - Price: 400-1,500 RMB/night
● Major domestic chains (Atour / JI Hotel / Hanting) - Acceptance rate: 90-95% - Price: 150-400 RMB/night
● Independent small inns (under 150 RMB) - Acceptance rate: ~30% - Price: 80-150 RMB/night
● Guesthouses / courtyards - Uncertain - Price: 100-300 RMB/night
Where to Stay
● First visit -> Bell Tower / South Gate (inside the city wall) - walk to Muslim Quarter, city wall, Beilin Museum; Metro Line 2 runs right through
● Want nightlife -> Giant Wild Goose Pagoda / Qujiang - step right out into Datang Everbright City
● Budget -> North Street / Longshouyuan - along the metro, 200-400 RMB gets it done
What to Book With
Trip.com. It's the only platform with an "Accept Foreign Guests" filter, fully English interface, and supports international credit cards. Booking.com's foreign-guest info is unreliable - you'd have to call each hotel to confirm.
WARNING: Bring your original passport. The front desk must scan it and register you with the local police - takes about 5-15 minutes. Try to arrive before 10 PM; it's more complicated late at night.
Red line: By law, foreigners must complete accommodation registration within 24 hours of check-in. Proper hotels handle this for you at the front desk. But if you booked a guesthouse or private courtyard, the host may not know the process - you'll have to go to the nearest police station or community policing office to register yourself. Don't skip this, or you could be stopped when leaving the country.

3. Getting Around Xi'an
3.1 Airport to Downtown
● Metro Line 14 - 40-50 min - 15-22 RMB - First choice, most reliable
● Airport shuttle bus - 60-90 min - 25-30 RMB - Backup when metro isn't running
● Taxi / DiDi - 45-70 min - 120-150 RMB - For large luggage or late-night arrivals
● Unlicensed cars - DO NOT RIDE - you will be ripped off
Metro Line 14 to Xi'an North Station, transfer to Line 2 to Bell Tower - about 70 minutes total. If arriving late at night, book an airport pickup on Trip.com in advance.
3.2 Metro
Most useful lines for tourists:
● Line 2 (Red) - North Station -> Bell Tower -> South Gate - 90% of tourists never leave this line
● Line 1 - Sajinqiao (Muslim Quarter food area)
● Lines 3/4 - Giant Wild Goose Pagoda
● Line 9 - Huaqing Pool direction (transfer needed for Terracotta Warriors)
Payment: Alipay ride code is the most convenient. You can also buy a Chang'an Tong physical card (18 RMB refundable deposit, cash top-up). Day passes: 24-hour 20 RMB, 48-hour 35 RMB.
3.3 Getting to the Terracotta Warriors
Metro Line 9 to Huaqing Pool Station, then transfer to Bus 613 to the Terracotta Warriors. Or take the Tour 5 bus (Route 306) directly for 7 RMB.

4. How to Buy Tickets
This is where foreigners mess up the most. Core principle: buy all popular attraction tickets online in advance - you basically can't buy them on-site.
Ticket Quick Reference
● Terracotta Warriors - 120 RMB (peak season) / 100 RMB (off season) - Buy via official WeChat mini-program "Qinshihuangling Museum" or Trip.com - Book 8 days ahead (sells out instantly during peak season)
● Shaanxi History Museum - Free (special exhibitions 30-300 RMB) - Official WeChat mini-program - Book 3-7 days ahead (extremely hard to get)
● City Wall - 54 RMB - WeChat "Meet the City Wall" or on-site - Same day is fine
● Huaqing Palace - 120 RMB - Official channels / Trip.com - 1-3 days ahead
● Giant Wild Goose Pagoda - 50 RMB (tower climb +30 RMB) - On-site / online - Same day
● Mount Hua - 160 RMB (peak season) / 100 RMB (off season) - Official mini-program - Up to 10 days ahead
WARNING: Terracotta Warriors: You must enter your passport number, and entry is by passport scan. Foreigners can buy through Trip.com - English interface + international credit card. The official Qinshihuangling Museum platform supports 24 languages and 34 currencies, including direct payment in euros.

5. 3-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Immersed in the Old City
Morning: City Wall Cycling
Enter at South Gate, ride the full 14km loop - about 1.5 hours. Bike rental 45 RMB/person, tandem bike 90 RMB. Go early - 8:30 AM is quiet and the ride is fantastic. The wall now has AR glasses for guided tours and exoskeleton robot experiences - quite cyberpunk.
WARNING: New rule starting July 2026: Foreign tourists who buy city wall tickets online cannot scan directly at the gate. You must first go to the ticket exchange window at South Gate or East Gate, present your passport, get a paper voucher, then go through the turnstile with ticket + face recognition. It takes an extra 5 minutes - don't skip it, or you waited in line for nothing. For AR glasses and exoskeleton experiences, book in advance on the WeChat mini-program "Meet the City Wall" - they're often fully booked on-site.
Noon: Muslim Quarter - But Don't Eat on the Main Street
Take photos on Beiyuanmen Main Street, but the real food is hidden in the alleys: Sajinqiao, Dapiyuan, Beiguangji Street, Miaohou Street, and Xuexi Lane. Main street roujiamo 12-18 RMB, alley price 8-12 RMB. Main street paomo 38 RMB, alley price 30 RMB.
Afternoon: Shaanxi History Museum
Free but must be reserved 3-7 days in advance. Spend 2-3 hours. Strongly recommend hiring an English guide - without one, hundreds of thousands of artifacts are just a warehouse tour.
Evening: Giant Wild Goose Pagoda Fountain + Datang Everbright City
Fountain show is free, starts around 21:00. For Datang Everbright City, arrive before 18:00 - any later and it's packed. Night views, immersive performances, hanfu dress-up experiences, all free. All 299 merchants have foreign-card POS machines, so payment is seamless.
Day 2: Eastern Route - Terracotta Warriors + Huaqing Palace
Morning: Terracotta Warriors
Depart at 7:30. Metro + bus or Tour 5 bus. Arrive by 8:30.
Tour order: Pit 1 -> Pit 3 -> Pit 2 -> Bronze Chariot Gallery.
WARNING: You MUST hire a guide. Without one, it's just "looking at clay people." Official English guide 100-200 RMB for 1.5 hours, or book on GetYourGuide ($23+, includes hotel pickup, rated 4.9/5).
Noon: Lunch in Lintong Town
Don't eat at the restaurants right outside the scenic area - overpriced and bad. Walk into town and find a proper restaurant.
Afternoon: Huaqing Palace
See the Imperial Pool ruins and Xi'an Incident site. 2-3 hours. Hire a guide or rent an audio guide (20-40 RMB) - otherwise it's just pits and gardens.
Evening (Optional): The Song of Everlasting Sorrow
Grand live performance inside Huaqing Palace. Must book in advance - tickets are extremely hard to get during peak season. Two shows: 19:30 and 21:40. If you choose the second show, it ends near 11 PM - pre-book your DiDi back to the city, or unlicensed drivers will charge whatever they want.
Day 3: Deep Culture + Slow Pace
Morning: Beilin Museum (Forest of Stone Steles)
Authentic calligraphy steles by Yan Zhenqing and Liu Gongquan. Honestly, without a guide, foreigners can't appreciate the calligraphy. Hire a calligraphy-specialist guide (about 100 RMB) - the experience is completely different.
Noon: Shuyuanmen Cultural Street
Right next to Beilin. Four treasures of the study, calligraphy, rubbings - browse around and grab lunch.
Afternoon: Small Wild Goose Pagoda + Xi'an Museum
Free but requires reservation. Much quieter than the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda. The gardens are lovely.
Evening: Bell Tower + Defu Alley
Climb the Bell Tower for a panorama of the old city. Then head to Defu Alley bar street to wind down for the day.

6. Which Attractions Are Worth It, and Which Are a Waste
Top 6 for Foreign Tourists (Based on Real Review Data)
● Terracotta Warriors - TripAdvisor 4.5 stars. "Unreal," "Life-changing" - the scale is mind-blowing
● City Wall Cycling - A 14km loop is a one-of-a-kind experience in the world
● Datang Everbright City - Brilliant night views + free + hanfu experience, foreigners go crazy taking photos
● Tang Le Gong "Empress of the Great Tang" - GetYourGuide 4.9 stars. Immersive Tang palace show with dining. Received over 100,000 foreign visitors in the first half of 2026
● Giant Wild Goose Pagoda + Fountain - Asia's largest musical fountain, free. The story of Xuanzang has international recognition
● Muslim Quarter + Great Mosque - "Food heaven. Reminder of the Silk Road influences"
Places You Might Not Understand Without a Guide
● Beilin (Forest of Steles) - Calligraphy aesthetic threshold is too high, almost no English descriptions -> Must hire a guide
● Famen Temple - Buddhist relic culture is too deep, many translation errors on foreign-language signs -> If you haven't studied Buddhism, skip it
● Small Wild Goose Pagoda / Xi'an Museum - Some reviews say "95% of exhibits have no English labels" -> Enjoy the architecture and gardens, don't stress about the exhibits
● Great Mosque - Islamic + Chinese architecture fusion, complex religious context -> The exterior architecture is worth seeing; inside needs a guide
● Huaqing Palace hot spring ruins - Without a guide, just pits of stones -> Rent an audio guide
Attractions Where You MUST Hire a Guide
● Terracotta Warriors: Without a guide = "just looking at clay people." Military formation, crafting techniques, excavation stories - all depend on the guide
● Shaanxi History Museum: Hundreds of thousands of artifacts - without narration, it's a warehouse tour
● Beilin: Calligraphy steles - foreigners without a guide are completely lost
● Huaqing Palace: The story of Yang Guifei and the Xi'an Incident - without background knowledge, it's just a garden
Guide options: Book English guides at official windows, or on GetYourGuide/Trip.com. Multiple languages available (English/Japanese/Korean/French/German/Spanish/Russian, etc.).
WARNING: NEVER follow people soliciting customers at scenic area entrances. They're unlicensed guides - quality is unreliable and they may take you to fake attractions.

7. What to Eat and What to Avoid
Foods Foreigners Actually Love
● Yangrou Paomo (Mutton Bread Soup) - The interactive experience of tearing bread yourself is unique. Go to: Tongshengxiang (near Bell Tower), Lao Sunjia, Lao Mijia. 30-60 RMB
● Roujiamo (Meat Burger) - Cheap and delicious, China's hamburger. Go to: Fanji (Zhuba Market), Ziwei Road Zhang Ji. 8-15 RMB
● Biangbiang Noodles - "One of the best places we ate during our China trip." Go to: Tianxia Diyi Mian (Jixiangcun). 15-30 RMB
● Guantang Bao (Soup Dumplings) - "Awesome local breakfast." Go to: Jia San Guantang Bao. 15-25 RMB
● Suantang Shuijiao (Sour Soup Dumplings) - Tangy and spicy, very accessible flavor. Go to: Ma Er Suantang Shuijiao (Sajinqiao). 18-25 RMB
● Huluji (Gourd Chicken) - Shaanxi intangible heritage, crispy outside, tender inside. Go to: Zui Chang'an, etc. 50-80 RMB
● Bingfeng Soda - Xi'an's version of Fanta, perfect with roujiamo. Available everywhere. 3-5 RMB
The Right Way to Do the Muslim Quarter
Local consensus: Beiyuanmen Main Street is a "tourist trap." Red willow skewers under 20 RMB are basically duck meat + food coloring + meat tenderizer. Pomegranate juice is concentrate mixed with water. Viral "mirror cake" has doubled in price.
TIP: Take the right route: From the main street, duck into Sajinqiao, Dapiyuan, Beiguangji Street, Miaohou Street, and Xuexi Lane. Same food, 30-40% cheaper, much better taste.
What to Absolutely Avoid
● Main street red willow skewers - Duck meat disguised as lamb, food coloring + tenderizer
● Pre-cut fruit / nut cake - Sold by the "liang" (50g), one weigh-in = tens of RMB gone
● Overly bright pomegranate juice - Concentrate mixed with water
● "CCTV Recommended" signs - Marketing titles bought with money
● Free sample pushes (snowflake crisps / handmade candy) - After you taste, they weigh it by the jin, hundreds of RMB per jin
● Tang Le Gong dumpling banquet (for walk-in tourists) - Walk-ins get seated in corners; reviews say it "rips off foreigners"
Many people go to Tang Le Gong for the "Empress of the Great Tang" show for the "eat while you watch" experience. But if you buy a ticket as a walk-in, you're often seated in a corner with poor views and mediocre food. Foreigners have complained on TripAdvisor that it "specializes in scamming foreigners." If you really want the experience, you can contact us to book VIP package tickets with no service fee.

8. Trap Checklist - These Scams Catch Thousands Every Year
High Risk
● Fake Terracotta Warriors - On the way to the Terracotta Warriors, someone takes you to "another entrance" -> Only use the official "Qinshihuangling Museum" entrance; don't follow anyone
● "Art Student" Scam - Near Giant Wild Goose Pagoda / city wall / Shuyuanmen, someone chats you up and invites you to a "painting exhibition" or "graduation show" -> Politely decline; don't follow strangers
● Unlicensed Taxis / Tuk-tuks - Soliciting at airports, train stations, and outside Terracotta Warriors -> Only use DiDi or metered taxis
● 88 RMB Day Tours - Promoted at hotels or on the street -> Absolutely do not book - 100% shopping tours disguised as sightseeing
● Driver-recommended "new attractions" - On the way to Terracotta Warriors, the driver says "there's a newer, better scenic spot" -> Ignore - it's a kickback fake attraction
Medium Risk
● Muslim Quarter priced by the liang - Always ask "how much total?" before buying
● Unlicensed / fake guides - Only book through official windows or platforms
● Paid photo ops (Datang Everbright City cosplayers) - Don't initiate photos; always ask the price before posing
● Hotels refusing foreigners - Always filter by "Accept Foreign Guests" on Trip.com when booking
